Topic of the Month: In with the Good, Out with the Bad

We are pleased that our website has become a heavily trafficked intersection where clients post jobs and candidates search for the position that will advance their careers. And while we certainly help our client companies find those top-notch professionals who can complete projects or lead the way forward, we do see postings, on occasion, that fail to attract the right candidates and reward the companies for the time and money they invested on our site.

After surveying some of the account executives around the office, we offer these guidelines that ought to help clients shape their future job postings to raise the odds that candidates will notice and be drawn to them. We will update these lists and add specificity to them as time and future results lead us.

Successful Job Orders …

  • Start by enticing the candidate with reasons why they should work for the company
  • Attach a generic title to the job posting since positions and titles are not always uniform
  • Talk about challenges of the job, career path, opportunities and list details expected of the candidate
  • Sell the opportunity
  • Are a marketing piece
  • Create a good first impression
  • Make it easy for professionals to apply, if possible, allow them to just click the apply button at the bottom of your post.

Poor Job Orders …

  • Make the company confidential – the good candidates won’t apply
  • Go on and on
  • Merely copy your company’s HR job description for the post. Candidates will go to the next one - fast
  • Don’t allow candidates to apply on your company’s website. Candidates won’t spend time following a difficult trail: they don’t have the time. Make it easy for them - do not send them to another site where they have to refind the job, re-register, and submit their resume again.

Finally, in the article below entitled "For Example" are reprinted two Job Postings that garnered a series of strong applicants for the companies which posted them. The postings are specific and complete, offer some sense of the culture of the firm, and one even advises that they prefer applicants who have a sense of humor. These posting might be something of a guide to you the next time you want to attract the right professionals to your company.
