Topic of the Month: Quality Control
There are many reasonable expectations you can place on ConstructionJobs.com when you enter into a business partnership with us by posting on our website the positions you need filled.
It is reasonable to expect that our Sales Associates will be at your beck and call, and so they will be. It is reasonable to expect that we will make our website easy to navigate and allow you to find your own postings, edit them, add new ones, and we believe we do that (see the following article entitled “Time”). There are many things you expect and deserve from a web board specializing in service to your industry.
What you might not expect, though you most certainly deserve – is a desire on our part to make sure that the candidates who seek you out – by responding to the positions you have posted – are strong candidates for the job. Web Boards can be impersonal – you visit a webpage, not an office, after all – and we can’t control who sends his or her information to you, of course, but we seek to educate applicants and help them succeed, thereby achieving our primary goal: helping you and your company succeed. For example, the June 2008 Newsletter which we are sending to the thousands of candidates registered in our database features a lead article entitled “Director and Star.”
The point of the article is this: to be a star, a candidate who will be coveted by a strong company like yours, one must also be a smart and forward-thinking director, directing one’s own career with intelligence, patience, and a sense of realism.
We urge our candidates to consider what makes them attractive to the companies which post positions on our site.
While some positions on our site are urgent calls for a warm body, any warm body, that is very rare. Therefore, we remind candidates that companies such as yours do not want job hoppers or unreliable candidates. We urge candidates to build a solid foundation, starting where almost everyone starts: at the beginning. Learn as much as you can about your trade, your specialty, your niche; watch, be patient, ask questions, work hard.
Then, when a foundation is laid – over several years – look for that next logical step forward in a sensible progression. A candidate can’t move from Field Engineer to Vice President of Operations, and shouldn’t apply for the VP of Operations job.
We suggest that candidates have some diversity in their career: different types of projects, different roles in those projects. Wide and deep knowledge will expose candidates to the spectrum of the industry and make them strong candidates when an opportunity arises, such as your company might post on ConstructionJobs.com.
We welcome feedback from you as we seek to help streamline your search for the best candidates – candidates you want to hire. Our goal is to fill the position you placed on our site, and we want to do that frequently enough that that, too, becomes a reasonable expectation.

We Continue to Grow!
Niche job boards (ie ConstructionJobs.com) continue to grow. Why? Because it makes sense. Consider this. Why would a construction professional, in the midst of a job search, want to look at unrelated jobs that happen to have the word "construction" in them? They don't, it's a clear waste of time. With industry specific job boards like ConstructionJobs.com, they cut the clutter, they know that all of the jobs on the board are within their industry. Niche job boards like ConstructionJobs.com also rank high on search engines because we truly are what we say and the content is very relevant. Try a search on Yahoo or Google for the Term... "Construction Jobs" and chances are you will find us top on the list.
You rarely hear about us in print as the newspapers, perhaps, are reluctant to mention us in fear of losing even more ground to the Internet in classified ads. The large job boards have their place but as time goes don't be surprised to see more true Industry Professionals go to their own Industry Specific Sites. Blue collar workers are starting to follow and this trend will continue going forward. So, next time you are looking to hire pros for your construction company come to our site and join the thousands of companies who have found success in hiring quality professionals.
That’s the reason we have invested thousands of dollars to improve the performance of our site over the past month as we continue to make enhancements not only to make our site faster but also to expand user functionality.
Throughout the first half of 2008, we have continued to see record traffic on our site each month. This further demonstrates that employers and job seekers see the value and benefits of ConstructionJobs.com. Check us out and see why we’re the site of choice in the construction industry.
Time
Poets have waxed rhapsodic for centuries about Time. Shakespeare wrote of “Devouring Time” and Andrew Marvell wrote a risqué poem about how to defeat Time and John Keats knew time would overtake him before his Grecian Urn crumbled, and Pink Floyd sang that the sun is always “racing around to come up behind you again.”
And those bards all lived in an era we would all describe as “simpler” and “slower”!
How much more, then, do we, in 2008, value time? We are all hurrying – I recently came back from vacation exhausted – and racing against time. We have created phrases like “Time Management” for work and “Time Share” for leisure. We come home and set timers to cook our dinners then watch sports that are dictated by time (other than baseball, the leaders of which sometimes investigate ways to speed the game up), then set our alarms so we wake up … on time.
Rest assured. ConstructionJobs.com wants to save you time.
- Visit our website. What do you want to do? Post a job?
- Then, assuming you are already a business partner of ours, please, do the following:
- Click “Post Jobs.” Wait one second.
- Now, Log in. Just your User Name and Password. A simple process.
- Now, find the Icon and words for “Job Manager.” Click that.
- Once in Job Manager, click Post NEW JOB. A screen will appear into which you can enter all the specifications for the urgent new position you need filled. We know: time is of the essence.
- Now, fill in the specifications for the position.
- You won’t believe how fast and easy it is. There are some free fields that require a little typing (the job title, whatever you feel like writing in the job description).
- There are some dropdowns that require a few choices.
- There is your company information, all rote stuff like contact information.
So, if you type, like me, with three or four fingers while looking at the keyboard, it’ll take you about 2 or 3 minutes to complete this process. If you’re a proficient typist, you’ll be way ahead of me.
Two minutes – maybe three - to come to the site, create a position profile which can be seen by thousands of candidates, and depart the site.
You might find it worth your time to post your open positions on our site. The return on a few minutes’ investment can be extraordinary.
My point: we understand your time is valuable. So we made the effort to post a position as fast and friendly as possible.
And our Sales Associates are fast, too – fast to pick up the phone (or call you back!) and fast to help you get things done. Come visit the site, and let us help you.
Thanks for your time.
